1. DEPRESSION HITS HARDER IN OLDER TEENAGE GIRLS
One in four older teenage girls will suffer at least one major depressive episode within the next four years and there is a strong correlation between depression and smoking, a new study by researchers at the U of a has found. Psychologist Dr. Nancy Galambos lead the study.

3. MACLEAN'S CALLS SHOTS, PROFS WARN
The influential Maclean's university ranking is likely perverting how schools set their priorities, associations representing university students and professors warned yesterday. The warnings come after internal documents at the University of British Columbia showed senior administrators pressured faculty members to manipulate course enrolments and cap class sizes in an effort to improve in the rankings. Carl Amrhein, vice-president academic at the University of Alberta, is quoted.

4. UBC RIGS CLASS SIZE TO BOOST RANK: DOCUMENTS
Correspondence obtained under Freedom of Information Act, document an eight-month effort to limit enrolment in courses for purpose of improving UBC's fifth-place finish among large research institutions in 2002 Maclean's university ranking issue. Senior administrators pressured faculty members to manipulate course enrolments and in some cases capped class sizes in effort to improve school's ranking.

5. MOVE TO CUT CLASS SIZE FOLLOWED RATINGS
UBC president Martha Piper received curt letter from UBC supporter after university fell in annual Maclean's university rankings and she quickly marshalled her top lieutenants to find way to raise UBC's ranking. In first half of 2003, team focused on class sizes by pressuring department chairs to do what they could to place caps on course enrolments.

U of A medicine study shows pharmacists could be new soldiers in war against heart disease. U of A cardiologist Ross Tsuyuki, author of report, says high cholesterol more likely to be diagnosed by druggists than doctors and following pharmacist's advice can lead to better health citing that pharmacists are under-utilized.

16. GHOST OF A CHANCE
City artist Stephen Notley has found out just how much sweat goes into making a feature film. Notley worked 10 hour days for three weeks making "creepy collages" to display in the room of a psychotic young girl in Ginger Snaps: Unleashed. His work was on screen for about two seconds. Todd Cherniawsky, the film's production designer and former University of Alberta classmate, asked Notley to work on the film.
