| From 1998 to 2001 I was involved with the Autonomous Robotic Vehicle Project (ARVP) student group. Each year the group competes against approximately 20 universities from Canada, the US and Japan at the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition. Each year the competition events vary slightly, but always involve outdoor high-level tasks such as obstacle avoidance and vehicle pursuit. The U of A team has been quite successful over the years, earning 2nd place finishes in design in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 1st in the GPS challenge in 2001. Below are some of the various photos accumulated over the years. | |||

From May 2000 to June 2001 I was
the project leader overseeing the design and construction of two rotary CNC
laser cutting systems. The machines are used to cut the charge holder strip
of downhole perforating guns. The first machine is ballscrew driven and cuts
a single charge strip at a time. The second machine uses linear induction
motor technology and is capable of cutting two identical strips simultaneously.
This machine helped LRI win the 2002 Canadian
Manufacturers and Exporters Innovation award for New
Technology. The entire mechanical design was completed using SolidWorks
CAD.
I definitely had a lot of
fun over the course of these two machines. Although working, doing an MSc,
being the mechanical team leader for the ARVP and TA'ing undergraduate ProE
sessions all at the same time made for some hectic days...
