I am a developmental psychologist in the
Department of Psychology and Director of the Centre for Research in
Child Development at the University of Alberta. I study cognitive
development and individual differences, and I am particularly
interested in problem solving, reasoning, and remembering in the
academic domains of mathematics and science. The general goals of my
research are (a) to develop methods for assessing specific knowledge
and skills in particular domains, (b) to explore the mechanisms by
which knowledge changes during the course of development, and (c) to
provide insights into how the acquisition of knowledge and skill can be
improved by means of better instructional design. I also teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in developmental psychology.
