Conference organization
This will be the fifth of a sequence of conferences on Scientific Computing and Applications held in the Pacific Rim region. All of them have the goal of bringing together mathematicians, scientists and engineers working in the field of scientific computing and its applications to solve scientific and industrially oriented problems and to provide a forum for the participants to meet and exchange ideas of common interest in an informal atmosphere.
The focus of this particular conference will be on the problems and methods related to image processing, financial applications and modelling of multiphase flows. The goal of the conference is twofold. The theoretical areas of interest include fundamental methods and algorithms for solving PDE's and linear systems of equations. On the other hand, it will try to attract the attention of the applied community, in particular the oil sands industry, banking and medical imaging, to present and discuss the applications of scientific computing to practical problems. The theoretical topics of interest are (but not limited to): Finite Element, Finite Volume Element and Finite Volume Methods for partial differential equations, splitting techniques and stabilized methods, iterative solvers and preconditioning techniques for large scale systems, methods for systems with a special structure, parallel algorithms and performance analysis.
Accomodation and transportation:
The conference will ake place in the conference facility of the Inns of Banff. At this hotel there is a block of rooms available at the conference rate of $122 CAD + 11% tax. The organizers prefer if the participants arrange the accomodation themselves in which case they should explicitly mention the conference name while booking. This rate will be available until March 25, 2006 or until more than ninty participants book a room. Please note that the normal rate for a hotel in Banff will be about $200 during that period. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-563-8764 or 1-866-704-3693 in Canada/USA and asking for the University of Alberta SCA'2006 rate or via an e-mail to reservations@bestofbanff.com. A credit card and a phone number are required at the time of booking. Please also provide the dates of arrival and departure. In case that you are unable to book directly please contact the organizers.
Information about a shuttle service between the Calgary Airport and Banff can be found at http://www.banffairportshuttle.com/.
Deadline for submission of a one page abstract: December 31, 2005. Please download a latex template here,
and e-mail your abstract to sca2006@ualberta.ca.
Notification of acceptance of the presentation: January 15, 2006.
Full paper submission: May 22, 2006.
Organizing committee: W. Allegretto, J. Bowman, Y. Lin, P. Minev and Y. Wong.
Registration and conference fee:
The early registration rate is $300 CAD (before March 25, 2006). Since we have limited time slots for presentations, and we received an overwhelming number of abstract submissions, we cannot guarantee you a registration after this date. Based on availability, we will consider (as an exception) such registrations and the late rate will be $350 CAD. The fee will cover an "icebreaker" reception, a banquet, coffee breaks and a half-day tour. Please print out the registration form and mail it to: P. Minev, Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2G1, or fax it to: 1 780 492 6826.
Contact person: Peter Minev, e-mail: minev@ualberta.ca, phone: 1 780 492 3398, fax: 1 780 492 6826.
Limited funds are available for supporting students and postdoctoral fellows to attend the conference or the short course. Please download the application form and submit the completed form together with you abstract. For details please contact the organizers.
