Keeping the Boat Afloat

The Scandinavian Studies Association is a group of concerned volunteers who are determined to preserve the unique tradition of the teaching of Scandinavian languages, literature and culture at the University of Alberta.

We are proud of our Scandinavian heritage and have been making strong efforts to keep the boat afloat on the rough seas of funding cutbacks. The B.A. in Scandinavian Studies program at the University of Alberta is the only one in Canada! It deserves your support!

Your help and your donations are needed to sponsor the teaching of Scandinavian studies at the University of Alberta.

Become a member of the group and lend a helping hand!

Tax deductible donations are placed in the Scandinavian Professorship Endowment Fund and invested by the University to yield revenues which sponsor this unique program.

The Scandinavian Program

Courses are offered in beginning, intermediate and advanced Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages, as well as in the famous literatures and cultures of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and in philology (Old Norse and the history of the Scandinavian languages). Some of the courses are taught in English.

This is a program which offers an academic opportunity for anyone to become familiar with the Scandinavian cultures or for anyone of Scandinavian origin to learn more of their heritage.

If you are interested in attending one or more of these courses and/or would like to have more details concerning the program contents please contact:

It's Working Already

We are already seeing the fruits of our labours of the past few years, in that the Scandinavian Studies program has survived and thrived, despite severe cutbacks in the Faculty of Arts.

Yes! It really works. But how are we achieving this important task? We organize functions, such as garage sales, casinos, bake sales and lectures which provide cash to place in the Endowment Fund.

We also go out into the community to ask people such as you to make a tax-deductible donation in your own or someone else's name.

All our donors receive receipts usable for tax deduction from the University of Alberta.

Corporate donations constitute an important component of our funds to date.

Why not put your name on the list of donors or volunteers?

Our current membership includes representatives from the following associations:
