Email: mdali@ualberta.ca Location of work: Matrikon Inc. and Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering (Rm 280A) Personal Details: I was born in a lovely
lush green village, Hajigonj Bazar, located in the district of Lalmonirhat
in the northern region of Bangladesh. Since I have been grown up in a
rural area, my childhood was not spoiled with the heavy burden of studying
a large number of books. I used to go to school only for few hours and
study another couple of hours. I enjoyed my childhood in doing many interesting
things such as fishing, swimming in ponds and rivers, plucking flowers,
gardening, playing soccer, cultivating barren lands, planting trees, and
repairing bamboo. By the way I still enjoy fishing and go for fishing
in Wabamun lake, Hasse lake, spring lake and many other Alberta lakes.
In 1999, I arrived at the University of Alberta to pursue my PhD degree in the area of Process Control. I was awarded PhD in process control in the summer convocation of June 2005. The PhD years have been very productive and fruitful to me. I received many prestigious awards such as Dissertation Fellowship, Andrew Steward Memorial prize, ISA educational foundation scholarship, etc. An international patent is in process on “Methods for detection and quantification of stiction in control valves”, which is the core work of my PhD dissertation. More importantly during the PhD period I got married with Shuma and God blessed us with our first son, Mahdi. I was awarded an Alberta Ingenuity (AI) Industrial Fellowship on the
same day Mahdi was born. I worked as an AI fellow for the period of December
2004 to November 2006. In February 2006 we have been gifted with another
son, Muttaqi. Since then my schedule has been very hectic for continuing
my work and maintaining a sound family life with a working wife and two
little kids. I forget all my tiredness when I see the cute smiles of my
two wonderful sons. Research: My research interests include process data analysis, nonlinearity analysis using higher order statistics such as bispectrum and bicoherence, modelling and diagnosis of stiction in control valves, data compression, control-loop performance assessment, monitoring KPIs, equipment health monitoring, root-cause diagnosis of plant-wide oscillations, plant-wide performance assessment. My research includes an innovative mixer of theory and application. Publications: A. Book: 1. Choudhury, M. A. A. S., Shah, S. L. and Thornhill, N. F., “Data-based Detection and Diagnosis of Process Nonlinearities and Valve Stiction” to be published by Springer-Verlag in 2007. B. Patent: 1. Choudhury, M. A. A. S., Thornhill, N. F., Shah, S.
