Location of work: Chemical and Materials Engineering Building (Room 581) - University of Alberta

Personal Details: I did my bachelors(BTech) from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in chemical engineering, 2004. I joined the University of alberta in the fall of 2004 and currently pursuing a PhD in chemical engineering. I did part of my initial schooling in a lovely hill station in Andhra Pradesh called Araku valley, I did my high-schooling in HMT Waco high school, Hyderabad, India. Apart from my research, I am very active in the area of computer programming, especially in 3D graphics API like opengl, directx. I also play a lot of games and sports -Chess, Quake III, Carroms, Cricket, Badminton, Table tennis to name a few (and I sure have at least one medal to display).

Area of Research: My main research topic is to develop image based soft sensors for the chemical engineering industry and especially the oil sands industry. Image based sensors offer a cheap alternative to conventional sensors and are also completely non-intrusive as far as the system is concerned. A further challenge is to use the image sensors in process automation (such systems are very rare in the chemical process industry). The algorithms that we develop are strongly based on theory but have a sound practical application. I am currently working on the use of particle filters on images to obtain measurements of key quantities in real time. Most of this research is being done in the Suncor extraction plant in Fort McMurray, Canada.
