Location of work: Chemical and Materials Engineering Building (Room 280D) - University of Alberta

Personal Details: B.Sc. (1998) from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh. M.A.Sc. (2001) from University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Currently enrolled in the PhD program in Process Control at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. I was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I completed my high school education from Holy Cross Girls High School and Holy Cross College, both located in Dhaka. I enjoy travelling to new places, trying food from different cuisine, watching movie and cricket, and above all, I love playing with my toddler son.

Research: I am interested in the area of process monitoring and modeling using multivariate statistical analysis. Having a strong chemical engineering background, I like to work in projects that combine the knowledge of process control and chemical engineering. Some of my recent projects include:

1. Development of a PLS (Partial Least Squares) based soft sensor to predict Melt Index (MI) for a low density polyethylene plant (Sharmin R, Shah S.L., Sundararaj U., Vande Griend L., Sun Y., Chemical Engineering Science, in press).

2. Developing a new algorithm for recursive least squares for time varying processes

3. Developing a PCA (Principal Component Analysis) based fault detection scheme to monitor the onset of decomposition in an industrial polymerization reactor.

I have previously worked in the area of fluid flow through porous media, ground water remediation and surfactant enhanced NAPL (Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) dissolution. (Sharmin R., Ioannidis M.A., Legge R.L., Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, 82, 145-164, 2006).
