In 1982, Dr. Greg Korbutt was
hired as a technician at the
Dr. Korbutt's recent work on co-transplantation of
islets with Sertoli cells is very exciting. Using this
novel approach, he has been able to protect rat islets from immune attach long
term without any antirejection drug therapy. This
work could very well allow us to transplant diabetic patients using an
unlimited source of tissue (i.e. neonatal pig islets) with no anti-rejection
drug therapy.
