Dr. Gregory S. Korbutt, PhD

In 1982, Dr. Greg Korbutt was hired as a technician at the University of Alberta in the islet transplantation laboratory of Dr. Ray V. Rajotte. Dr. Korbutt, obtained both a BSc and MSc at the University of Alberta. He then did a second MSc at the Vrije Universitet in Brussels followed by a PhD at the same institution. Both degrees were awarded cum laude.

Dr. Korbutt's recent work on co-transplantation of islets with Sertoli cells is very exciting. Using this novel approach, he has been able to protect rat islets from immune attach long term without any antirejection drug therapy. This work could very well allow us to transplant diabetic patients using an unlimited source of tissue (i.e. neonatal pig islets) with no anti-rejection drug therapy.
