Aiko Lawrie was born and raised in Kelowna, B.C. Married in Vancouver in 1961, she moved to Edmonton shortly
thereafter where she now lives. She
has one son, Marc.
Aiko has worked at the University of Alberta Hospital Glaucoma Clinic from
1962-1969 and then worked for R.A. Morgan Ophthalmologist until 1982. Aiko was also employed at the University of Alberta Hospital
in Medical Transcription part-time from 1979-1987 then full-time from
1988 to 1992 when she was declared legally blind and retired.
Along with volunteer work with the Friends of
University of Alberta Hospital and CNIB, Aiko has served on the City
of Edmonton Advisory Board on Services for Person with Disabilities
since 1998. She is that
Board’s representative to the Edmonton Transit Advisory Board. Aiko is a Member of the Board of Directors of the Brail Tone
Music Society of Canada – the Edmonton Division, and a Director of
The Steadward Centre at the University of Alberta. She is also a member of the Dinner Optimist Club of Edmonton.
