The C.A.G.E. Program -- Adapted
Physical Activity Instructor: Summer Program Staff
The C.A.G.E (The Centre for Adapted Group and Individual Exercise) is
the children and youth component of The Steadward Centre for Personal &
Physical Achievement. The C.A.G.E opened June 2005 and has a current
enrollment of 125 children. The successful candidate would have the
opportunity to acquire hands on learning in the area of motor skill
development, fitness and disability sport for children with varying
abilities. He or she will develop skills in the following areas:
exercise prescription, coaching, program planning, program
implementation, written and oral communication skills.
Duties and
Responsibilities:
-
Work one on one
with children and youth with disabilities on skill development in
the area of sport, fitness and gross motor skills.

Teach fundamental
and specialized motor skills to children ages 4 to 12 years of age
with physical, developmental or sensory disabilities.

Develop fitness
programs for youth.
-
Plan and
facilitate group programs for varying age groups.
-
Plan and
facilitate summer camps and clinics.

Work in
conjunction with local organizations to promote programs and
organize special events.
Qualifications:

Currently
pursuing or recently completed a university degree in physical
education, education or equivalent
·
Experience
working with children with varying disabilities
·
First Aid
Certification and CPR
·
Background
in motor skill development and assessment techniques an
asset.
·
Experience
designing exercise programs and fitness appraisals
·
Creative,
can make decisions quickly
·
Good
physical condition
·
Willing to
work some evening shifts (till 8:30 pm)
·
CFC
recommended
·
Sign
language an asset (or willing to learn)

Salary: $14.08 per
hour/ 35 hours per week

Fellowship
Description:
A 12 month fellowship
opportunity for a graduate student at the MSc or PhD level is available
through The Steadward Centre in conjunction with the MS Society of
Canada – Edmonton Chapter in the area of physical activity and multiple
sclerosis. A recipient may reapply after a one year term for a further
12 months. The MS ActiveNow Fellow would:
ü
Provide direct program
assistance to persons with MS
ü
Enhance knowledge of health
and fitness and the importance of physical activity opportunities for
persons with MS through involvement in ongoing research initiatives as
appropriate
ü
Disseminate knowledge about
the exercise related research
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants will:
ü
Have a first class academic
standing
ü
Be a graduate student in the
first of second year of a Masters or PhD program
ü
Have a background in adapted
physical activity, rehabilitation medicine, or a related discipline
ü
Be qualified in health,
fitness and lifestyle counseling and assessment. Qualifications may
include but are not restricted to:
§
Health, fitness, and
lifestyle assessment and counseling certification from a recognized body
(e.g., Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology; National Health &
Fitness Program)
§
Personal training
certification from a recognized body (see above)
§
First Aid and CPR
Selection:
The MS ActiveNow
Fellow will be selected by a panel comprised of the Dean of the Faculty
of Physical Education and Recreation, the executive director of The
Steadward Centre, and a representative of the Edmonton Chapter of the MS
Society (MS ActiveNow Coordinator or Executive Director).
