Award
The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and
Physical Activity (CAAWS) announced today the
names of the twelve recipients of its
WISE Fund
grants of $900 (see list below). The
WISE (Women in
Sport Encouragement) Fund was developed in response to the
ongoing financial need within the sport community.

The Steadward Centre Travels to
London for FES Rowing
January 15 - 21, 2006 proved to be an eventful
week for the Steadward Centre as a few of our staff had the opportunity
to visit London (England) for a whirlwind trip. The trip was
planned with the goal of providing the Steadward Centre team more
knowledge with regards to FES rowing and it's beneficial applications.

In Memory of A Dear Friend,
Colleague, and Advocate -- Ewen Robert Nelson -- Student Fellowship
It is with great sadness that we share with you
the news of Ewen Nelson passing on January 5, 2006 at the age of 48
years. Ewen Nelson was the Manager of Information Systems for The
Steadward Centre, where he worked for over fifteen years.

The Steadward Centre Announces New
Director
On behalf of The Steadward Centre, we are pleased to announce the
appointment of Dr. Donna Goodwin as the Director of The Steadward Centre
for Personal & Physical Achievement. Dr. Goodwin leaves the College of
Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan to join the Faculty of
Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta. She
will begin her new role January 3, 2006.

Drs. Gary McPherson and
Robert Steadward Receive Alberta Centennial Awards for Sport and Recreation
On December 8 the Alberta
Centennial Awards for Sport and Recreation will honour ten academics
associated with the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Physical
Education & Recreation in a ceremony in Red Deer. Some of the awards
will be made posthumously. This one time award, which recognizes
athletes, coaches, builders and leaders, among others, honours 100
Albertans from across the province for their outstanding contributions
to the field.

Karen Robinson wins National Award!
The Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability has
named Karen Robinson as the 2005 recipient of the Gerry York Moving to
Inclusion Award. This award recognizes outstanding work carried out in
Canadian communities and schools that promotes and advances the
inclusion of children and youth with disabilities in physical activity
programs.

Running Room Presents Fall Classic Road Race
2005 Running Room Fall Classic 5 & 10 Miler Run & Walk will

New Name for Children & Youth Programs
The Centre's Children and Youth Programs originally titled
"Youth Activation Station", but now will be known as CAGE: Centre
for Adapted Group and Individual Exercise.
The new name better reflects the program, and uses the name of the
program's training area in the Universiade Pavillion (Butterdome),
commonly known as "The Cage". Visit the CAGE

Construction Notice - Access to VVC North Doors
Renovations to accommodate the new DATS Passenger Drop Off outside
the north side of the Van Vliet Centre will start the week of July 4th
(area between VVC and SUB). Access through the west wing north doors
will be maintained but access into the ice arena through the main
arena doors will be closed off throughout the construction period. The
roadway between Van Vliet Centre and SUB will be partially barricaded
to allow for the construction activities, but through access will be
maintained for deliveries to SUB and the Administration building. It
is anticipated that this construction will be completed by mid-August.

Wheelchair Tennis Program Resumes

been obtained with a grant from Wheelchair Sports Alberta!

Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion Event

Sunday, June 12, 2005 the 3rd Annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion
event took place in every Province and Territory across Canada.

Foundation is a registered charitable organization and an
international leader in the field of spinal cord injury. To date, the

New Program Manager at TSC
Kate Zmurchyk has been hired as the new Manager of Fitness and
Lifestyle Programs at The Steadward Centre. She has been working
in he position in an acting capacity since the end of January.
We are glad to have her formally appointed to the position!

Rick Hansen Visits Edmonton to Launch Wheels in Motion Event
Rick
Hansen launched the 2005 Edmonton Wheels in Motion event on Thursday,
March 10. The Steadward Centre will benefit from the funds
raised locally - they will go to help fund the SCITCS FES Exercise Clinic. The event take place at Varsity Field, University of

Edmonton Police Service took on members of the local media in a short

The “Show Your Heart Day” campaign at the Garneau Safeway on
February 12th was a huge success! The Steadward Centre had many

Staff Changes at The Steadward Centre
Both Dr. Garry Wheeler and William Gill left their employment at
The Steadward Centre on Friday, January 28, 2005. Dr. Wheeler
will be joining the MS Society of Canada, Alberta Division as
Vice-President Client Services. He starts there on January 31,
2005. William Gill will be pursuing a dream to pursue his dream
of developing an adventure camp/farm experience for people with a
disability. He hopes to have his business up and running sometime in
the summer or fall of 2005.
We wish them both the very best for their future success and thank
them for their years of dedication to The Steadward Centre making
a difference in the lives of people with disability.
In the interim, Dr. Gary McPherson will be the
acting Director, and Kate Zmurchyk will be the acting Program Manager.

The WORLD MASTER GAMES will be in Edmonton from July 22 – 31,
2005.
If you are over 30 years of age, and have a passion for competition,
the Games are for you! The event will bring together about 16,000
able-bodied and disabled athletes from around the world, some of whom
are former champions in their sport, to compete and enjoy the festival
atmosphere of the Games.
PASSION QUALIFIES YOU! The Games welcomes people of all skill
levels from recreational to elite, and there is no upper age limit.
Medal events for competitors with disabilities are: athletics, rowing,
shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis and triathlon.
Come on out, meet new people and have fun this summer, at the World
Masters Games!

local associations to host a conference to discuss the issue of
inclusion. Inclusion or Illusion? was held April 30

2003 marked the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of The Steadward Centre.
Originally the “Research and Training Centre for Athletes with a
Disability”, The Steadward Centre has been a presence at the U of A
for 25 years. A 25th Anniversary Celebration with activities
was held on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at Foote Field to mark the occasion. Visit
