I am writing you today to express my concerns regarding the Alberta government´s response to Fort Chipewyan and the serious health issues its residents face. Independent, industry, and government studies have established that a link may exist between the community´s high rates of anomalous cancers and nearby oil sands development activity. However, the government refuses to engage in any comprehensive study to verify whether oil sands development has an impact on the community´s deteriorating health. By refusing to do so, the government has created significant anxiety and fear among Fort Chipewyan residents, as they do not know what is behind the abnormally high cancer rates within their community. As an Albertan, I believe the provincial government must do more to alleviate the concerns of Fort Chipewyan residents and find out what is behind the community's anomalous cancer rates. This can only be achieved by engaging in a human health baseline study and an independent, peer reviewed, comprehensive assessment of the region's environmental toxicity levels. Such a study will provide the answers community residents are seeking and help the government develop policies to address the situation. The severity of the situation demands immediate government action. I hope you will relay my concerns and recommendations to your colleagues, relevant provincial ministries and agencies, and the Premier´s office. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
