History of the School
1977 The School is
established at Sherbrook School by a group of Japanese parents for the purpose
of teaching their children Japanese language and Japanese culture. Initial enrollment in the School is 30.
1978 The 1st
annual drama presentation is held.
1979 Several
significant developments take place in the School. Awareness of the increasingly global role of teaching
Japanese leads to a number of new courses and the establishment of a program
for non-Japanese speaking students. The School begins to
participate in Edmonton Heritage Festival every summer to introduce Japanese
culture.
1980 The 1st
annual summer picnic is held.
1981 Kindergarten
class is closed due to a lack of attendance.
1982 The teachers
attend the 1st festival of Alberta Ethnic Teachers Association. The students join a camp with Japanese
Language School in Calgary.
1983 Kindergarten
class is re-established.
1984 The School
moves to Parkallen School.
1985 Teachers from
Japan under program of Education for Japanese Children Living
Oversea visit the School.
1986 The School moves
to Westbrook School.
1987 The 1st
annual speech contest is held. The School celebrates 10 th Anniversary.
1988 Job descriptions of teachers and stuffs are implemented.
1989 Teachers participate in North America West Area Japanese School
Teachers Convention.
1990 The School hosts North America West Area Japanese School Teachers
Convention.
1991 The School coordinates Japan Day at Westbrook School.
1994 The School celebrates the opening of Edmonton Japanese Association
Community Center.
1997 The School celebrates 20 th Anniversary.
1998 The School participates in Japanese Language Convention at the
University of Alberta.
1999 New programs are established: Pre-school program and calligraphy
class.
2000 Junior Kindergarten
class is established.
2002 The 1st Casino volunteer work.
2003 The School moves
to Richard Secord School.
2004 School web page is launched.
2005 Library automation is implemented.
2007 The School celebrates 30 th Anniversary.
