UASUS Executive Statement
Earlier today, the Executive of the University of Alberta Science Undergraduate Society (UASUS) voted 2:1 for dissolution (Patrick Robertson and Patrick Jones for, Braden Teitge against) and petitioned the Students' Union Vice-President Academic for de-recognition as the official Faculty Association for the Faculty of Science.
It has become apparent that in the current environment, it is impossible for us to effect the change needed to address the many deep-rooted problems that have become entrenched within the Faculty Association. We recognize that we are unable to represent the undergraduates of the Science Faculty properly, and so we have agreed to disband as per SU bylaw 8350, Part 1 Section 5a. The students need a Faculty Association that can represent them effectively to the Faculty and the rest of campus, and we have great hopes for the future.
The new year will be a fresh start for student government in Science, and with it, new faces as your representatives. We are positive that our successors will use their prior experience as past UASUS executives, from working with the Students' Union, and elsewhere on campus and in the community for the greatest good of all science students, and wish them the best of luck. Details on the transition will be forthcoming from the SU pending a hearing of the DIE board to provide an interpretation on SU Bylaw 8350.
We applaud the students at large who took an interest in the workings of the Association representing them and raised their concerns. It is all too easy for students to become apathetic to the workings of government and groups on campus, thus it is a good sign when students become so involved. We hope this interest and involvement will continue well into the future.
Finally, thank you to those who supported us and gave us constructive feedback while we tried to initiate change within UASUS, we look forward to seeing you around campus.
Happy holidays, and we wish you the best of luck with the remainder of your exams.
The UASUS Executive
Dear Faculty of Science Student Body,
I would like to inform you that I, Chris Madan, have resigned as President of UASUS. I also would like to remind all of you that the issues being brought up regarding UASUS' are not shortcomings of the current executive, but rather problems from previous administrations that have yet to be resolved within UASUS itself. The current executives are doing their best to address these issues.
Concerns regarding UASUS should be directed to the general UASUS email (uasus@ualberta.ca), or the Interim President, Braden Teitge (teitge@ualberta.ca)
~ Chris Madan
