2001 - Uni Nats, Barrie - Bull, 2nd

CUUC, 2001 in Barrie, Ontario marked the first time that the UofA men's team rose to national prominence in university ultimate. Unfortunately, my own playing experience was short-lived. I believe it was against Queens where both Mark K and I layed out to get a d-block on the same disc, collided, and I was calling lines from the sidelines for the rest of the tourney (a situation that I would have to get used to over the next couple of years). At least we won that game (extending our winning streak against Queens to 3). Led through the wind and rain by a veteran lineup including Mark, Mike F, Robin N, Cory M, Steve-O, and Jeff W, we ran all the way to the final. We were also helped by the emergence of three rookies who would go on to be standout players for both the UofA and EMU: D-Fro, B Mills, and Garv. After another stomping of Queens in the semis (4 in a row!), we found ourselves in the finals. However, we were up against a very tough UBC team (aarrgh, the troll!) and after a good fight ended up on the losing side. However, this result did show us that we could be successful on the national scene and lead us to expect such success for 2002 (which may have proved to be our downfall)…
