Smitty Library
Smitty Library, more formally known as the D. E. Smith Reading Room in Psychology, reopened on October 21, 2002, after being closed for many years. The library is named after D. E. Smith, who at one time was the Head of Philosophy and Psychology, and eventually became the Dean of Arts and Science at the University of Alberta . Located on the 2nd floor of the Psychology wing, this library has a diverse collection of journals and books related to psychology. Many hard-to-find journal issues from as far back as the 1950s are available, along with a large number of issues from the 1970s and 1980s. Instead of waiting days for material to be sent over from BARD (Book and Record Depository), why not see if Smitty has it? Here is a pdf document and an EndNote X library (EndNote software required) that lists all of the books that are currently filed in the D.E. Smith reading room.
Besides books and journals, the library also has networked computers, a computerized catalog and checkout system, and a number of tables and chairs. It is a quiet study space and a convenient place to do library research and hold small meetings.
Smitty Library is generally open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is staffed by members of the UPA. Check the schedule posted on the door for any changes to hours of operation.
Thank you to everyone who helped with the reopening and continued success of Smitty Library!
Volunteers Now Needed for Smitty Library!
We are now recruiting volunteers for Smitty Library for the semester. As a volunteer, it would be your job to open and close the library, maintain a quiet study space and sign out books as needed. Because Smitty is rarely very busy, you would be able to spend virtually all your volunteer time studying. Thus, volunteering here will not tax your time reserves. Plus, you get to choose the times you volunteer. Volunteering at Smitty is also a great way to meet other psych students. On top of that, at the end of the semester, you can request a letter of reference for your efforts. All we ask from you is to be reliable and show up for your shifts.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Matt Galas at galas@ualberta.ca with your available shifts. Orientation will be provided.
