ALTERNATIVE COUNSELLING RESOURCES  

The following is a compilation of alternative counselling resources within the City of Edmonton that one can access during times of crisis.

PLEASE NOTE:  In the case of life threatening emergencies, please proceed directly to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital.

 Face-to-Face Crisis Intervention/Emergency Assistance  

These referrals provide same-day face-to-face assistance for people experiencing a crisis situation and who need immediate help to stabilize personal functioning to a more manageable level.

 

Capital Health Region, Adult Mental Health Crisis Response Team

482-0222 (24 hours – 7 days/week)

A mental health team that will go on location (e.g., to your home) to assess and stabilize a crisis situation related to severe depression with suicide ideation or intention, anxiety, fear, paranoia, schizophrenia, and other unusual behaviour.  Services provided to adults only.

 

Single Session Counselling, The Support Network

A walk-in counselling service with a single session approach.  Priority will be given to those in crisis www.thesupportnetwork.com/walk_in.html.

 

University of Alberta Psychiatric Treatment Clinic

492-8822 (24 hours)

8440 – 112 Street

A walk-in service with psychiatrists who can provide assessment and treatment for mental health problems related to depression, anxiety, feeling suicidal, confusion, thought disorder, family and couple problems, and major losses. New clients should call first and report only at 8:30am or 12:30pm, Monday to Friday.

A free service by peer volunteer students who have received training in crisis intervention, suicide intervention, and supportive listening. Partnership with The Support Network. Open to all members of the campus community by drop-in or call for an appointment www.su.ualberta.ca/sdc.

 

 

Telephone Distress Centres  

 

These referrals also benefit those in crisis who want immediate assistance but wish to remain anonymous. Support is available over the phone 24 hours a day. Most help lines offer support for specific problems and will offer additional sources of help if needed.

A 24-hour phone line for U of A students who are in distress or experiencing a crisis situation.

 

The Suicide/Distress Line, The Support Network

A 24-hour phone line for people in a problem situation or in suicidal crisis.

 

Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton

A 24-hour crisis line for survivors (and their families) of past and current sexual assault and sexual abuse.

 

WIN House

A 24-hour crisis line for women who are abused or under the threat of abuse.
