Admissions and Deadlines

Admission requirements

Qualifications for eligibility

The following represents the qualifications for eligibility:

  • Urban Cohort
    1. An average of 68% is required for high school applicants
    2. English 30-1
    3. Social Studies 30-1 (Aboriginal Studies 30 included)

    The 2017-2021 Urban Secondary Cohort is for Aboriginal students only.

  • Community-Based Elementary Program

    Applicants to ATEP must have 60 specific credits completed in order to be considered for admission to the final two years.

  • After Degree Program
    1. An approved 3 or 4 year Baccalaureate Degree.
    2. An admission grade point average of at least 2.0.

    All students in the After Degree program must have 6 credits (usually 2 courses) in English/Language Literature. Students who don't present this at the time of admission will be required to complete 6 credits prior to being eligible to graduate from the program.


    Students who have been required to withdraw from an accredited post-secondary institution should contact ATEP to discuss the implications related to admission.

Letter of Intent

This letter should introduce yourself and state why you want to attend ATEP, why you want to become a teacher and your plans for the future.

Your letter of intent is a chance for you to introduce yourself to us. We want to hear your story and to know a little about you. You might tell us what your strengths, skills, interests and hobbies are. Some of the questions that you might address in your letter are:

  • Why do you want to become a teacher?
  • Why do you feel ATEP is a good fit for you?
  • What are your long-term goals?
  • What would your plans be once you have completed the program?

Your letter should be no less that 1 page and no more than 2 pages.

Paper Application

A paper application is required - please do not apply online. Please remember the nonrefundable admission fee of $125.00. We accept cheques or money order, made payable to "University of Alberta".

Transcripts

High School Transcripts

Official transcripts are required. If you are registered in courses the transcript will state what courses are in progress.

Post Secondary Transcripts

If you have any post-secondary courses, we will look at them. Official transcripts are required. If you are registered in courses the transcripts will state what courses are in progress.

Proof of Aboriginal Ancestry

When applicable, a photocopy of both sides of your proof of Aboriginal Ancestry Card (ie. status card, Metis Nation Card).


Application Interview

If you meet the minimum qualifications and have your application documents ready, you'll get to meet the ATEP team for an interview.
