Finalizing your admission
Once you have submitted your online or offline program admission application along with the $150 application fee payment:
1. Wait for us to contact you
Within 4-8 days: our Registration Office will process your application and send you an email regarding your University Student ID and UAlberta Email account. Once you have received this email, wait for your Letter of Acceptance to arrive:
- in approximately 4 to 7 weeks by regular mail
- in approximately 5 business days by courier
2. Get a Canadian Study Permit (if necessary)
Submit a copy of your Letter of Acceptance to your local Canadian Embassy or Consulate in support of your application for a Canadian Study Permit.
3. Make your housing arrangements
Once you receive your travel documents make your travel and housing arrangements. This should be done at least two months before you plan to arrive in Canada.

You will need to be present for your placement test – it takes place a few days prior to the class start date.
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
From the Government of Canada website: "Starting March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or transit through Canada will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid visa." Click here for more details.
Arriving in Edmonton
International and domestic flights land at the Edmonton International Airport. If you have applied to the ELS Homestay Program, your host family will greet you at the airport.
Begin your studies
1. Placement test
Come to the English Language School office (Enterprise Square) on the day of the Placement Test. Please refer to the IDP Course Schedule for the Placement Test dates. Bring a copy of your Letter of Acceptance, your passport and Placement Test fee to the Placement Test.
2. Register for your class
Once the results of the Placement Test are posted (usually the next day), you can register for your class. Your Program (tuition) fee must be paid at this time. We cannot accept partial payments. Registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis and classes fill up quickly. You should come to the office as soon as possible to register. Please note that your spot in the class is not guaranteed until you have paid your Program (tuition) fee.
