Entrance Requirements

Completion of Five Academic Subjects

Students applying for admission from high school (higher secondary education) must show that they have successfully completed five academic subjects. The academic subjects you need to present will vary by program and Faculty. Find out which subjects you will need to present for your program of choice with the program finder.

Post SPM

Applicants are required to present a minimum 12 years of study for admission to bachelor's degree programs. Please note, completion of the Malaysian SPM alone is not sufficient for admission. Applicants should present additional studies, such as a pre-university or international school program, ADP, or UEC. Below are some of the common curricula for students in Malaysia.

A levels

American Degree (Transfer) Program

You can apply to the University of Alberta as a transfer student. Admission will be based on both your ADP transcript and secondary school results. Applicants should submit transcripts as well as course descriptions for transfer credit evaluation. The required GPA for transfer ranges from 2.3-3.0 for general programs and 2.7-3.7 for honors, specialization, and professional programs.

Australian Matriculation Program

University of Alberta accepts one of the following Australian qualifications:

  • Australian Capital Territory Year 12 Certificate
  • New South Wales Higher School Certificate
  • Northern Territory Senior Secondary Studies Certificate
  • Queensland Senior CertificateSouth Australian Certificate of EducationTasmanian Certificate of Education
  • Victoria Certificate of Education
  • Western Australian Certificate of Secondary Education

Applicants should present mostly As and Bs (4s and 5s) on their combined final results in order to be competitive for admission.

Canadian International Matriculation Program

Admission to the University of Alberta from the CIMP is based on a student's results on the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. For competitive admission ranges, please refer to the page on admission averages for Canadian qualifications.

STPM

You can apply to the University of Alberta with your Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) pre-university examinations. Admission will be based on a combination of your SPM and STPM results. Applicants should present mostly As and Bs in order to be competitive for admission.

UEC

UAlberta welcomes applications from students studying in the Chinese Independent High School system in Malaysia. To obtain a conditional offer, you would need your school results including the first semester of your final year. Your offer would become unconditional upon receipt of your Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and meeting the University of Alberta's requirements. Applicants should present marks between A1-B4 in the required courses to be competitive for their desired program.

Transfer Credit for Students at INTI, Sunway, and Taylor's

Applicants from INTI, Sunway, or Taylor's to programs in the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation; and Faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences, will be evaluated for transfer credit

This transfer credit information is only applicable to students in American Degree Programs.

Admission-based scholarships - automatic evaluation!

You are automatically evaluated for these scholarships when you apply for admission. Your eligibility will be based on your high school admission average at the time of your admission offer.

International Admission Scholarship
Top students could receive up to
$5,000 CAD, depending on admission
average.
Regional Excellence Scholarship
Top students from certain regions
could receive up to $5,000 CAD, based
on admission average.
Gold Standard Scholarship
The top 5% of students in each faculty could receive up to $6,000, depending on admission average.

Application-based scholarships - apply early!

You must apply to an undergraduate degree program before you can apply for any entrance scholarships. The deadline for application-based scholarships is January 11, 2023. Check out some of our tips about how to apply or visit our scholarship application form to get started!
