The Schulich Leader Scholarship is a competition for Canadian high school students enrolling in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) program in university.

The value of this scholarship depends on what program you are entering:

  • Engineering Program: $120,000 Over Four Years 
  • Science, Technology, or Mathematics Program: $100,000 Over Four Years

Eligibility

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada who is graduating from a Canadian high school, secondary school, or CEGEP.
  • Be nominated by your high school, secondary school, or CEGEP.
  • Have academic excellence, leadership, charisma, and creativity.
  • Be entrepreneurial-minded and intend to pursue a career in one or more of the focus areas of technology, engineering, entrepreneurship and business enterprise, and applied scientific research.
  • Strong consideration will be given to students with financial need.
  • Not pursuing a career as a practicing physician and/or medical researcher (e.g. doctor, dentist, nurse, psychologist, pharmacist, optometrist, etc), and not intending to become a professor or conduct theoretical research.
  • Not focusing on activism (i.e., environmental, political, or societal).

Application Process

  1. Get nominated by your high school counsellor by January 30, 2024.
  2. The nomination form must be completed and submitted by your high school counsellor or other school administrator. Only one student can be nominated per high school (four per CEGEP).
  3. Apply to the Schulich competition by February 20, 2024.

If you are verified as the nominee for your school, you will be sent a link to the scholarship application form; on this form, indicate that you wish to attend the University of Alberta. (You will also need to apply for admission to the University of Alberta.) If your application is selected by the Schulich competition, it will be forwarded to us for review.

The University of Alberta will select our Schulich Leaders; successful candidates will be notified in March.

Renewal Requirements

To remain eligible for this award in your first year, you must maintain full-time registration in your STEM program. To receive the annual renewals, you will need to meet the minimum renewal requirements (2.0 GPA on a full normal course load in your program). For more information, see the Schulich Leaders website.

Annual Report

You must also submit (via the Office of the Registrar) an annual report in May to the donor organization. Annual reports must include:

  • Your name
  • Your STEM program
  • Confirmation of continuing eligibility for the upcoming academic year
  • Proof of enrolment in the upcoming academic year for:
    • An off-campus work-study or co-op program, or
    • An exchange or study-abroad program
  • Any information pertaining to the default of the award conditions

Award Promotion

Schulich Leaders are required to participate in promotional efforts, including photo shoots, news stories, and social media / web features, as required by the University of Alberta and the Schulich Leaders competition.
