2014-2015 Projects Funded
September 2014 Grant Recipients
In October the Alumni Student Council adjudicated eight grant applications and awarded $10,875.00 to five successful applicants. The projects the ASC has agreed to support on behalf of the Alumni Association are:
Alberta Not-for-Profit Case Competition (ANPCC)
Type: Conference
Date: February 26 - March 1, 2015
Our student group hopes to positively impact both students and not-for-profit organizations. Both of these groups have the ability to benefit one another profoundly. We intend to educate students about the various opportunities available in the non-profit sector. Students will have a chance to interact and learn more about not-for-profit organizations in two symposiums. Through a case competition, competing students will present a solution to a challenge currently faced by a not-for-profit organization (this organization will receive several hours of free consulting time from the students in the competition).

University of Alberta Debate Society
Lord Hugill Cup 2014
Type: Debate Tournament
Date: November 21-23, 2014
The Lord Hugill Cup is an annual British Parliamentary debate tournament hosted by the University of Alberta Debate Society (UADS) that strives to prepare teams for the World Universities Debating Championships. At this year's Hugill, we hope to attract a variety of attendees from across Western Canada and the United States to showcase our university and debate society. We wish to host a well-run tournament that enhances the University of Alberta's reputation and incentivizes attendees to participate in our tournaments and events for years to come. By hosting a tournament in Edmonton, UADS is also able to increase the accessibility of debate. It becomes far easier for University of Alberta students and alumni to participate competitively or administratively in an event that they don't have to travel to or spend excessive amounts of money to attend. Hosting a tournament here ensures that both students and alumni can remain connected to our debate society. Attendees of this tournament will enhance their oral and academic skills; debate trains individuals to give organized, persuasive public speeches and develop logical argumentation and critical thinking skills. This activity teaches the value of thinking strategically and creatively on your feet, emphasizing the value of examining your own beliefs. Both alumni and current students will benefit from the opportunities this tournament provides to meet and learn from each other, enhancing the University of Alberta's interconnectedness and campus community.

Video Game Artwork & Design
Edmonton GDX 2015Type: Exhibition/ symposium featuring video games and game developers
Date: April 2015
Like VGAD's mission, to create a community for aspiring game designers, the GDX is intended to foster a sense of community within the game development scene at the University of Alberta. There are three main components to the event:
- an Edmonton-focused (but U of A-centric) game project showcase;
- a pitch opportunity to interested parties (recruitment or investment) for developers; and
- the creation of a temporary social space for developers and players to experience Edmonton's (and in particular the U of A's) game scene.
- Each of these components are based around a desire to encourage interaction between Edmonton's (and especially the U of A's) game development community.
