Dean moved to Alberta for one year to complete an M.Ed. in Secondary Education at U of A and subsequently made his home in the province.  Some years later he completed a Ph.D. in Educational Administration, again at U of A, with a specialization in higher education.

He taught high school in Nova Scotia and Alberta and then joined the community college system.  He spent 22 years with Keyano College in Fort McMurray serving as a chair, dean, and vice-president, academic. Subsequently he was a director with the ministry of advanced education, a sessional lecturer in higher education in the Faculty, and a consultant with Alberta’s colleges.  His college and government roles led to ongoing involvement with the U of A in the areas of credit transfer, college-university degree completion programs, aboriginal teacher education, enrollment expansion, and new program approval. He has published in the areas of multicultural education and higher education.

His community involvement includes President of the United Way in Fort McMurray, President of the Edmonton and District Historical Society, and numerous leadership roles with his Rotary club and district level Rotary organizations.  His wife, Mary, is a graduate of the Faculty and both of their sons are graduates of the Faculty of Arts.
