Outreach

The department offers various programs and opportunities related to Departmental Collections. Instructors, individuals or organizers looking for specific details of the various outreach offerings are encouraged to discuss their specific needs with the associated collections staff.

School Workshops and Tours

School Tours of the Bryan/Gruhn Archaeology Collection – 1 hour tours or workshops can be arranged with the technologist, Shirley Harpham.   For this tour, instructors can choose a general introduction to Archaeology with artifacts for examples and a short project or they can request to view artifacts that will reflect the curriculum that they are working on in the classroom.  We have material from Canada, the Far North, South and Central America as well as European paleolithic materials.  Instructors are encouraged to discuss their specific needs with the technologist.  

Elementary School Tours of the Bryan/Gruhn Ethnographic Collections - 50 minute tours of the collection can be arranged with the curator, Pamela Mayne Correia.   For this tour, instructors can request to view artifacts that will reflect the curriculum that they are working on in the classroom.  We have material from the Far North, South and Central America as well as First Nations materials.  Instructors are encouraged to discuss their specific needs with the curator.  

High School Forensic Workshop - a 2.5 hour workshop offered to high schools in the Edmonton and region area. This workshop provides a hands on lab in which students are able to experience the main analysis techniques used by forensic anthropologists.  These include: age, sex, stature estimation, time since death, animal versus human, and individualizing characteristics. Students enrolled in high school Forensics will find this workshop stimulating.  Contact: Pamela Mayne Correia for details and booking times.

Elementary School Tours of the Fossil Hominid Cast Collection - 50 minute tours can be arranged with the curator Pamela Mayne Correia.  In the Fossil Hominid Cast Collection Tour students will be exposed to examples of fossils which represent our human evolutionary history.  Specimens include the famous "Lucy", Australopithecus afarensis, as well as neandertals, cromagnon, early humans such as Homo habilis, Homo erectus.  Instructors are encouraged to discuss their specific needs with the curator.

Requests can be made to view artifacts that will reflect your current curriculum.

  • Forensic Workshops for police and search and rescue

Archaeology Workshops offered include informal gatherings of students or Formal Workshops in conjunction with the Strathcona Archaeological Centre.  Both offer hands-on experience with interesting traditional technologies including materials, instruction and safety.

Forensic Workshops for police and search and rescue - a 7 hour workshop designed to meet the needs of the organization.  This workshop provides supports to both policing agencies and search and rescue in the identification of human remains, collection strategies, legislation, and analysis.  the workshop is designed in conjunction with the attendees to best meet their needs.  For more information and scheduling contact Pamela Mayne Correia.

Volunteer Programs

Include opportunities to work in department Collections, on Outreach Programs, and for researchers. Collection and researcher programs usually require a commitment of 2 or 3 hours a week for at least one term. These take place during normal business hours. Outreach programs are more variable depending on the specific program and can include only a few days commitment but may be outside normal business hours.
