Areas of Teaching and Research

Studio Art with a focus in Printmaking, Drawing, Intermedia

The human body and the elemental in nature are recurring sources for Liz's art practice, which investigates transitional states between material presence and the ephemeral, and issues relating to the fragility of life and the environment. Current work focuses on the theme of the healing properties of water and its relationship to the body. She works in various media including etching, photo intaglio, digital media, and installation. In 2008 Liz was the recipient of the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Research Excellence at the University of Alberta. In 2009 she was named Distinguished University Professor and elected into the Royal Society of Canada for her contributions to Canadian culture. Recent exhibitions include Beyond Printmaking: Images in Objects (installation) at the Jesuits Gallery of Contemporary Art, Poznan, Poland, in 2009; Imagining Science: An Artistic Exploration of Science, Society and Social Change (installation) at the Art Gallery of Alberta in 2008; and Human/Nature: Contemporary Canadian Installation (4 artists) at the Doland Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai and The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre in 2004.

Biography

Liz Ingram was born in Argentina and grew up in New Delhi, Mumbai and Toronto. She is a Distinguished University Professor Emerita at the University of Alberta where she taught for over 40 years. She has received awards for her prints in Canada, Slovenia, Korea, Brazil, Estonia, India and Finland. She was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Academy of Arts for her contributions to Canadian culture, and was the recipient of the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Research Excellence and U. of A. University Cup.
