Department of Art & Design Scholarships and Awards

Every year in March, the undergraduate advisor will email you with application procedures and deadlines for our Departmental awards.  Please note that for studio-related scholarships, you will be required to submit images of your recent work. The deadline is always in late April.

Margaret Andrekson Scholarship in Art History (Undergraduate)

$750
Awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies with a BA or BA Honors in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture. The recipient is chosen on the basis of academic standing. Endowed by Margaret Andrekson. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

John Baldwin Memorial Prize in Visual Communication (Undergraduate)

$250
Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduating student in the BFA or BDes degree program for the most consistently imaginative approach to Visual Communication Design. Endowed by Dr and Mrs RG Baldwin in memory of their son John, a student in visual communication while he attended the University of Alberta. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Elizabeth Ann Burgess Award in Contemporary Art (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student with satisfactory academic standing in the Department of Art and Design. Selection is based on demonstrated proficiency, creativity, diversity, and potential in the field of painting. Endowed in memory of Dr. Elizabeth Ann Burgess, DDS, BFA, by her family, friends and colleagues. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Justine Angelina Carswell Memorial Award in Fine Arts (Undergraduate)

Variable (maximum $500)
Awarded annually to students with satisfactory academic standing entering the third year of the BFA degree program who demonstrate a passion for painting and drawing. Endowed by Donna McCallum and Stuart Hewko in memory of Justine Angelina Carswell, Arts '84, also known as Denise Joan Hewko, to support students and encourage their continued pursuit of Fine Arts. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Samuel James and Augusta Kreye Deans Award (Undergraduate) NEW!

$1,500
Awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of study or convocating with a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art & Design degree. Selection based on academic standing and excellence shown in painting or drawing in relationship to the land. Preference given to a student who has demonstrated artistic excellence in representing Alberta's landscapes. A piece from the successful recipient's portfolio may be chosen to become a part of the University Hospital, Stollery Hospital, Mazankowski Institute and The Edmonton Clinic's permanent art collection if agreed upon by the Friends of the University Hospitals and the student recipient.
Funded by: Endowed by the Samuel James Deans and Augusta Kreye Deans Award Fund. Endowment held at the Edmonton Community Foundation.

Diane Dompé Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts (Undergraduate)

Awarded in even numbered years to a student entering the second, third or fourth year in a Fine Arts degree program (Art & Design, Drama, or Music) on the basis of superior academic achievement and financial need. Funded by friends and of the late Diane Dompé. Eligible students are automatically considered.

Florence Andison Friedman Award (Undergraduate or Graduate)

Variable ($2,500)
Awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students with satisfactory academic standing in Painting and Drawing. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated promise in the area of painting and/or drawing. Endowed by friends and family of the late Florence Andison Friedman. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Glenora Rotary Club Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Two awards made to students with superior academic standing, made every other year at $500. Sponsored by the Glenora Rotary Club.

Natalka Horeczko Scholarship in Painting and Print Design (Undergraduate)

$4,750
Awarded annually to an undergraduate with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies, specializing in painting or printmaking in the BFA degree program. Endowed by the late Natalka Horeczko. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Heinz Jordan Memorial Scholarship (Undergraduate)

Variable ($500)
Awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies in the BFA degree program in the field of Visual Arts. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic standing. Sponsored by Heinz Jordan and Company Limited. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Claude Lienau Memorial Award (Undergraduate)

$750
Awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing specializing in Industrial Design. The recipient is selected on the basis of demonstrated progress and promise. Endowed by friends and family in memory of Claude Lienau, a former student in the Industrial Design program at the University of Alberta. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Livia Stoyke BFA Best of Show Award (Undergraduate)

$500
To be awarded annually to a graduating BFA undergraduate student. Selection is made by a jury composed of the three faculty members in Fine Arts representing different media areas and is based on work in the BFA graduating student exhibition. Endowed by the Livia Stoyke Foundation. Eligible students are automatically considered.

Livia Stoyke VCD Leadership Award (Undergraduate)

$500
Awarded to a graduating Bachelor of Design student who demonstrates exceptional leadership in the area of Visual Communication Design. Selection is made by the VCD faculty. Endowed by the Livia Stoyke Foundation. Eligible students are automatically considered.

Eva Toban Scholarship (Undergraduate or Graduate)

$1,500
Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student with superior academic achievement in the areas of Design Studies and/or Fine Arts Studies. The recipient will be the student who, in the opinion of the Award Committee, has demonstrated the most promise in creative development in the last academic year. Endowed by Associate Chief Justice Tevie H Miller and Arliss Miller in honour of their mother Eva Toban on her 80th birthday. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

Universiade '83 Undergraduate Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Variable (up to $2,000)
Awarded to students with first-class standing who have demonstrated excellence in athletics or fine arts. Universiade '83 Scholarships are made possible from an endowment created with the surplus funds from the 1983 University Games held at the University of Alberta. Eligible students are automatically considered.

University of Alberta Alumni Award in Fine Arts (Undergraduate)

$200
Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduating student with satisfactory academic standing in the BA in Art and Design or BFA or BDes program. The recipient will be the student who has demonstrated the best progress in the program. Supported by the General Alumni Association. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

External Awards

The BMO 1st Art Competition (Undergraduate)

$5000 to each provincial winner; $10 000 to the national winner
Each year, Art and Design schools across Canada are asked to nominate outstanding graduating students in our senior level ART and DES classes to apply for this competition.  In recent years we have had one provincial and one national winner.

The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Undergraduate or Graduate)

$15,000 - $18,000
The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation provides financial grants to students and artists in the early or developmental stage of their career. The Foundation focuses solely on those who work in a representational style of painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking and who are committed to making the practice of their art a lifetime career. The Foundation welcomes applications throughout the year; there is no deadline for filing an application.
