Department of Art & Design Scholarships and Awards

As of Winter 2021, all applications for Department of Art & Design Scholarships and Awards must be made through the central Student Awards Application website.

Applications open January 15th and close in late March/early April. Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria for Art and Design studio-based awards will be contacted at a later date to request any necessary supplemental application materials, such as a portfolio of work.

Natalka Horeczko Scholarship in Painting and Print Design (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to an undergraduate with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies, specializing in painting or printmaking in the BFA degree program. Endowed by the late Natalka Horeczko. Eligible students apply in April of each year.

The Anna Bychinsky Fine Arts Award in Art and Design (Undergraduate) 

Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in the second or third year of any undergraduate degree in the Department of Art and Design in the Faculty of Arts. Selection based on demonstrated accomplishment and promise in Art and Design, and academic standing. The Award may be held only once by a student.

Margaret Andrekson Scholarship in Art History (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of studies with a BA or BA Honors in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture. The recipient is chosen on the basis of academic standing. Endowed by Margaret Andrekson.

John Baldwin Memorial Prize in Visual Communication (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduating student in the BFA or BDes degree program for the most consistently imaginative approach to Visual Communication Design. Endowed by Dr and Mrs RG Baldwin in memory of their son John, a student in visual communication while he attended the University of Alberta.

Elizabeth Ann Burgess Award in Contemporary Art (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student with satisfactory academic standing in the Department of Art and Design. Selection is based on demonstrated proficiency, creativity, diversity, and potential in the field of painting. Endowed in memory of Dr. Elizabeth Ann Burgess, DDS, BFA, by her family, friends and colleagues.

Florence Andison Friedman Award (Undergraduate or Graduate)

Awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students with satisfactory academic standing in Painting and Drawing. Recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated promise in the area of painting and/or drawing. Endowed by friends and family of the late Florence Andison Friedman.

The Tamara Kozlowska-Szynkowski Scholarship in Art and Design

Awarded to students with superior academic achievement enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design or a Bachelor of Design. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated commitment to the fine arts and portfolio review.

Justine Angelina Carswell Memorial Award in Fine Arts (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to students with satisfactory academic standing entering the third year of the BFA degree program who demonstrate a passion for painting and drawing. Endowed by Donna McCallum and Stuart Hewko in memory of Justine Angelina Carswell, Arts '84, also known as Denise Joan Hewko, to support students and encourage their continued pursuit of Fine Arts.

Claude Lienau Memorial Award (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing specializing in Industrial Design. The recipient is selected on the basis of demonstrated progress and promise. Endowed by friends and family in memory of Claude Lienau, a former student in the Industrial Design program at the University of Alberta.

Livia Stoyke BFA Best of Show Award (Undergraduate)

To be awarded annually to a graduating BFA undergraduate student. Selection is made by a jury composed of the three faculty members in Fine Arts representing different media areas and is based on work in the BFA graduating student exhibition. Endowed by the Livia Stoyke Foundation. Eligible students are automatically considered.

Livia Stoyke VCD Leadership Award (Undergraduate)

Awarded to a graduating Bachelor of Design student who demonstrates exceptional leadership in the area of Visual Communication Design. Selection is made by the VCD faculty. Endowed by the Livia Stoyke Foundation. Eligible students are automatically considered.

Eva Toban Scholarship (Undergraduate or Graduate)

Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student with superior academic achievement in the areas of Design Studies and/or Fine Arts Studies. The recipient will be the student who, in the opinion of the Award Committee, has demonstrated the most promise in creative development in the last academic year. Endowed by Associate Chief Justice Tevie H Miller and Arliss Miller in honour of their mother Eva Toban on her 80th birthday.

Universiade '83 Undergraduate Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Awarded to students with first-class standing who have demonstrated excellence in athletics or fine arts. Universiade '83 Scholarships are made possible from an endowment created with the surplus funds from the 1983 University Games held at the University of Alberta. Eligible students are automatically considered.

University of Alberta Alumni Award in Fine Arts (Undergraduate)

Awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduating student with satisfactory academic standing in the BA in Art and Design or BFA or BDes program. The recipient will be the student who has demonstrated the best progress in the program. Supported by the General Alumni Association.


External Awards

Glenora Rotary Club Scholarships (Undergraduate)

These awards are given to continuing students with superior academic standing, made every other year. Generously sponsored by the Glenora Rotary Club; all eligible students are automatically considered.

The BMO 1st Art Competition (Undergraduate)

$5,000 to each provincial winner; $10,000 to the national winner
Each year, Art and Design schools across Canada are asked to nominate outstanding graduating students in our senior level ART and DES classes to apply for this competition. Nominated students will be contacted by the Department in April. In recent years we have had two provincial winners and one national winner.

The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Undergraduate or Graduate)

$15,000 - $18,000
The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation provides financial grants to students and artists in the early or developmental stage of their career. The Foundation focuses solely on those who work in a representational style of painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking and who are committed to making the practice of their art a lifetime career. The Foundation welcomes applications throughout the year; there is no deadline for filing an application.
