Exhibition: September 26–October 14, 2017
Reception: Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 7 to 10pm
Visual Communication Design: Bahaa Harmouche
Industrial Design: Derek Jagodzinsky and Siyi Xie
Three Master of Design graduates at the University of Alberta harness design processes to address complex problems and activate change. A visual showcasing of their final research projects, this group show provokes dialogue about cultural identities, social cohesion, urban sustainability and adaptable healthcare. Through design-driven modes of enquiry, Heterotopia seeks to question the status quo and propose new alternatives.
How can the designer apply creative leadership—as an interrogator, a facilitator, a mediator—in meeting the challenges we face together as communities? Can we create or make visible other spaces for identities to emerge, voices to converse, and lived spaces to re-structure? Grounded in these questions, the work in this exhibition makes us re-think the role of designers in the transformation of selves, societies and systems.
A selection of work highlighting the research of students graduating with a Master of Design degree, including Bahaa Harmouche (VCD), Siyi Xie (ID) and Derek Jagodzinsky (ID).
