Paul Cantor ('62 BA), Distinguished Alumni Award recipient
Each year, UAlberta Alumni Awards recognize outstanding alumni who have made exceptional contributions to the community through their professional achievements, community service and innovation.
This year, we are proud to announce that seven Arts alumni are being recognized for a wide variety of achievements in six categories.
Paul G. S. Cantor ('62 BA) has been selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award - the Alumni Association's highest honour - for his contributions to the Canadian financial sector and commitment to international development and corporate governance. This award recognizes living alumni who have earned national or international prominence as a result of their outstanding professional achievements and service to society.
Margaret Evans ('14 BA) and Teresa Spinelli ('83 BA) will be receiving Alumni Honour Awards, which recognize the significant contributions made over a number of years by alumni in their local communities and beyond. Evans is being recognized for her contributions to journalism and for increasing awareness of human rights issues. Spinelli has been an active contributor to building community in Edmonton's inner city neighbourhoods.
An Alumni Horizon Award goes to Adam Sweet ('07 BA, '07 Cert [Globalization & Governance]), for his international and local work in public policy and engagement, encouraging all citizens to get involved in governance. The Alumni Horizon Award celebrates the outstanding achievements of UAlberta alumni early in their careers.
The Sports Wall of Fame recognizes the contributions of alumni as athletes and builders of university sport. This year, we celebrate A. Danielle Bourgeois ('05 BA, '09 LLB), who established herself as one of the best women's hockey players in Canadian University history while playing on the Pandas hockey team.
Heike Juergens ('72 BA, '79 MEd, '87 PhD) will be receiving the Alumni Service Award, which recognizes alumni who have demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment, dedication and volunteer service to UAlberta. Juergens was nominated for her dedicated volunteer service to UAlberta in areas such as Alumni Council, U School and the Senate.
Elizabeth Turnbull ('84 BMus) is a recipient of the Alumni Excellence Award, which recognizes specific, recent accomplishments of UAlberta graduates in the 12 months prior to the nomination deadline. Accomplishments may include major awards, national or international honours, major championships, appointment to high office, etc. Turnbull spearheaded a free 18-hour, 13-city concert, using the healing power of music to raise awareness of suicide prevention and mental health.
The award winners from all faculties will be recognized at a formal ceremony on Monday, September 25 at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, as part of Alumni Weekend.
