Undergraduate Programs

What is Archaeology?

The study of archaeology involves the analysis of physical artifacts and other remains to decipher the human history related to those artifacts. The exploration of past societies opens the door to how humans have evolved throughout the centuries.

Why add this certificate to your degree?

The Certificate in Archaeology offers undergraduate students a solid grounding in archaeology within or alongside their main field of study.  It will give a head start to students planning to pursue graduate studies in archaeology or related fields, as well as to those seeking careers in one of the many public and private sector fields related, broadly, to heritage management, including museology, cultural resource management, and relevant sections of public administration.  Archaeology at the University of Alberta is recognized internationally for its excellence.  QS consistently ranks it in the top fifty worldwide and highest in the Faculty of Arts.

What experiences are involved in obtaining this certificate?

“This program will ensure that future graduates have a good foundation of archaeological method and theory, exposure to interdisciplinary approaches from both anthropological and classical archaeology, and the important hands-on experience of an archaeological field school. Currently, many applicants for entry-level positions with my firm are missing key components of this program.”  Kurtis Blaikie-Birkigt, Senior Project Archaeologist at Tree Time Inc., Edmonton.

What additional courses are required?

Certificate programs are designed to be completed in conjunction with regular undergraduate degree programs.  They give students the opportunity to enhance their undergraduate program and explore a special area of interest.

Both the Department of Anthropology and the Department of History and Classics have strong, longstanding traditions in archaeology and this certificate is the result of a true collaboration between the two.
