What is Civil - Military Leadership?
The certificate in Civil - Military Leadership is a partnership between the University of Alberta and the Canadian Armed Forces. It has been designed to provide students with knowledge that bridges the gap between highly specialized military training and academic enrichment.
Why add this certificate to your degree?
The certificate formally recognizes a student’s knowledge and skills in Civil - Military Leadership and their related field of study in the Faculty of Arts. The certificate’s coursework contributes to the development of two or more of the following key competencies and attributes:
- an historical perspective;
- the analysis of politics and political institutions;
- an understanding of social interactions and social problems;
- an awareness of individual differences and how people behave;
- an introduction to philosophical thought;
- better communication; and,
- organization, activism, and community engagement.
What experiences are involved in obtaining this certificate?
Students complete courses from a variety of departments in the Faculty of Arts, including Anthropology, Community Service-Learning, Drama, English, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Modern Language and Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women’s and Gender Studies. Students must also successful complete the Canadian Armed Forces Officer or Non-Commissioned Member classification training program.

of approved courses, including 9* of courses at the senior level, as well at the Canadian Armed Forces Officer or Non-Commissioned Member classification training program.
