What is a Community Linguist Certificate?

The Department of Linguistics, in conjunction with CILLDI (Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute), offers courses leading to an ★18 Community Linguist Certificate aimed at speakers of Canadian Indigenous languages or speakers of other endangered and under-documented languages.

Why add this certificate to your degree?

Are you a speaker or semi-speaker of an Indigenous language? Or perhaps you are an Elder or other fluent speaker, or community language activist wishing to develop the linguistic analysis skills to document a language, traditions or written literature. The Community Linguist Certificate provides the linguistic analysis and language documentation training.

What additional courses are required?

Students wishing to earn the Community Linguist Certificate must complete the courses listed on the university Calendar.
