The Faculty of Arts offers a Certificate in Civil - Military Leadership. This Certificate has arisen out of a partnership between the University of Alberta and the Canadian Armed Forces. The Certificate has been designed to provide students with knowledge that bridges the gap between highly specialized military training and academic enrichment.
The Certificate formally recognizes a student’s knowledge and skills in two areas:
- Military Leadership;
- Related Fields of Study in the Faculty of Arts.
The Faculty of Arts Certificate in Civil - Military Leadership is open to students who are currently enrolled in any undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta.
The Certificate consists of a total of *12 units of course weight from a list of approved courses with no more than *6 units of course weight from a single department, and with *9 units of course weight at the senior level. As well, to be awarded the Certificate, students must successfully complete the Canadian Armed Forces Officer or Non-Commissioned Member classification training program.
The list of approved courses can be found here. These courses were chosen to contribute to the development of two or more of the following key competencies and attributes:
- an historical perspective;
- the analysis of politics and political institutions;
- an understanding of social interactions and social problems;
- an awareness of individual differences and how people behave;
- an introduction to philosophical thought;
- better communication; and,
- organization, activism, and community engagement.
How is the Certificate awarded?
The Certificate will be awarded when a student completes all the requirements for a University of Alberta undergraduate degree, the Canadian Armed Forces Officer or Non-Commission Member classification training courses, and *12 from the approved list of courses
As this is an embedded certificate, the Certificate will only be awarded at the same time as an undergraduate degree. Successful completion of the Certificate will be recorded on your transcript.
