What is Urban and Regional Planning?
Professional planners create the vision of how cities, towns, and regions should develop in the future. Planners seek to ensure that built environments in rural and urban areas are developed in ways that promote sustainability, prosperity, and a better quality of life for all.
Why Study Planning at UAlberta?
The School of Urban and Regional Planning offers students dynamic opportunities to engage with planning issues both inside and outside of the classroom, dedicated planning studio space, a state-of-the-art Digital Imaging Facility, and provides co-op opportunities. Students can explore a breadth of courses both inside and outside the department, work with faculty who have a wide range of research expertise and/or outside of the university, with practicing planners.
Experience Beyond the Classroom
The School of Urban and Regional Planning includes many opportunities for students to use their knowledge in hands-on settings through the planning studio and Digital Imaging Facility.The School is a unit that offers undergraduate and graduate planning degree programs and streams - BA/BSc/MSc/PhD specialization. Students working towards a BA in Planning may choose to take on a paid work experience placement of 4, 8, 12, or 16 months. The department also offers planning field schools, where students have the opportunity to meet with leaders and planning experts, and tour both rural and urban project sites.

The BA major in Planning is a broadly focused degree on urban and regional planning. It focuses on issues of land use planning, economic development, regional planning, social issues and planning, and sustainability of communities.
- What can I do with a Planning degree?
The BA Major in Planning prepares students to enter the workforce as professional planners, giving them both the practical and theoretical knowledge that they will need to succeed in the field. Planning students may also go on to pursue other fields of interest, such as architecture, landscape architecture, civil service, engineering, law, education, or design.
