  • 2. Bios
    Canadian violinist Guillaume Tardif has travelled widely as guest soloist with orchestras (e.g. Peru, Brazil, Poland, Hungary, South Korea, the USA) and has collaborated with many distinguished artists (e.g. Malcolm Bilson, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Bobby McFerrin). He has been enthusiastically received at concert series (e.g. at Carnegie-Weill Hall in Gallois-Montbrun’s “24 Caprices de Paganini” with Roger Admiral), international summer festivals (e.g. Semper Music, Italy; Beverly Hills, USA) and at leading music institutions (e.g. the Liszt Academy, Beijing Central Conservatory, the Banff Centre). His focus on the virtuoso repertoire, the rediscovery of neglected works, new and commissioned works, and chamber music has led to innovative thematic projects and publications. Of note are several CD recordings (e.g. “From the Library of Joseph Szigeti”, Dell’Arco; “Tales from the Dinarides”, Wirth Institute), original arrangements and cadenzas, and new compositions by Canadian composers Howard Bashaw and Airat Ichmouratov. 

    His participation in international conferences has led to several publications, most recently the chapter “H. W. Ernst: Virtuosity and Flow” (Olms-Verlag, 2018), which included a recording of his performance of seven works by Ernst. In 2012, he was recognized as one of Avenue Magazine’s “Top 40 under 40” for his “Dare to Discover Music” series with the Enterprise Quartet and his course “Culture and Creativity” offered to music and business students. Exploring the diverse traditions of violin playing, he also produced the SSHRC-sponsored video-documentary, “The Genius of the Violin,” with Michael MacDonald. A graduate of the Conservatoire du Québec (Premier Prix de Violon), the Eastman School of Music (DMA), and the University of Alberta (EMBA), Guillaume Tardif is Associate Professor and String Area Coordinator at the Department of Music, University of Alberta and serves as President of the Alberta String Association (guillaume.tardif.com).


    Matthew Bengtson is in demand as both soloist and collaborator on modern piano as well as on fortepiano and harpsichord. Offering a diverse repertoire ranging from Byrd to Ligeti and contemporary composers, he has performed concerts in France, Poland, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Mexico, and in solo recitals at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City. He has performed with the Reading, Pottstown, Ridgefield and Bay-Atlantic Symphony Orchestras, and he has appeared with violinist Joshua Bell on NPR’s “Performance Today” and XM Satellite Radio’s “Classical Confidential.” His recordings of the complete set of Scriabin’s Piano Sonatas (Romeo Records) and a 3-CD recording of Karol Szymanowski’s solo piano music and violin/piano duo music with violinist Blanka Bednarz (Musica Omnia) have earned him praise from Fanfare magazine and the American Record Guide. He is also a co-author of “The Alexander Scriabin Companion: History, Performance, and Lore” (Rowman & Littlefield Press, 2017). 

    Mr. Bengtson has collaborated with Trio Camille, the Daedalus and Amernet String Quartets, and the Aurelio Ensemble. He recently formed “Sierra Duo” with cellist John Haines-Eitzen, recording Roberto Sierra’s complete cello/piano music for Albany Records. Mr. Bengston has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges, Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music and the Peabody Institute. He also served on the collaborative piano staff at the Curtis Institute of Music. Besides his musical attainments, Mr. Bengtson was educated at Harvard University with a focus in mathematics and computer science. Mr. Bengtson is currently Assistant Professor of Piano Literature at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Mr. Bengtson is a Steinway Artist (mattbengtson.com).
