UltraViolet presents Farm-to-Table: Fresh Local Music

January 11, 2019 at 7:30 PM
Convocation Hall

UltraViolet promises a cutting edge experience with virtuosic music performed by an agile and effervescent mixed quartet of musicians: Allison Balcetis (saxophone), Roger Admiral (piano), Chenoa Anderson (flute) and Amy Nicholson (cello).

In the spirit of musicking, Farm-To-Table: Fresh Local Music highlights the contemporary music eco-system in Alberta. This concert features music created almost entirely by Albertan composers - Brian Garbet, Emilie LeBel, Dave Wall, Ian Crutchley and Alexander Prior - making the experience of preparing for this concert especially fresh, intimate and alive.

Some works were composed specifically for members of UltraViolet, and the performers have also worked closely with the composers to realize their own artistic intentions.

Ultraviolet thanks The Alberta Foundation for the Arts for their support of this concert.

Known for his dedication to contemporary music, Roger has commissioned and premiered many new compositions. He works regularly with New Music Edmonton's UltraViolet and Aventa Ensemble (Victoria), and performs as part of Kovalis Duo with Montreal percussionist Philip Hornsey. Roger also coaches contemporary chamber music at the University of Alberta.

Amy Nicholson completed her undergraduate music degree at the Hannover music school in Germany. She's performed with the German Chamber Academy, North German Radio Orchestra and was invited regularly to perform in concert series throughout Germany. Returning home to Alberta, she completed her Masters of Music degree at the University of Alberta. Amy performs regularly with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Violet Collective, UltraViolet, the Opera Nuova Festival Orchestra, and local string quartets.

Internationally recognized as an ambitious contemporary saxophonist, Allison Balcetis has studied and collaborated with artists from around the world. Her international performance career includes concerts throughout North America, Europe, Brazil, Thailand and Taiwan. Recent projects include Curto-Circuito, a yearly workshop for young Brazilian composers, which has seen the creation of over 30 new pieces for saxophone and piano since 2014. Her work as a soloist and chamber musician has produced over 70 world premieres.

Flutist Chenoa Anderson is one of Canada's leading interpreters of new music and has been praised by critics, audiences and composers as a dynamic and exacting performer. As a freelance musician, she has performed with many of Canada's finest musicians and ensembles: Mixtur with composer Ian Crutchley, performing experimental repertoire for flutes, electronics, video and found instruments, and improvising with damn magpies.
