The 2017 Block A: Alumni & Student-Athlete Celebration:

The 2nd annual Block ‘A’ Student-Athlete & Alumni Celebration will take place on Friday, March 31, 2017.
A joint initiative between the Office of Alumni Relations and Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics, the event will honour the 2017 Golden Bears and Pandas student-athlete Block ‘A’ sweater recipients, as well as the second cohort of Pandas alumnae who competed between 1970-1974 but were not eligible at the time to receive a Block ‘A’ sweater.
Last year, Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics hosted its annual Block ‘A’ event, which recognizes student-athletes who recently completed their third year of eligibility. Later that same night, in front of 500 athletics alumni, current student-athletes and many other Golden Bears & Pandas supporters, the first annual Block 'A' Celebration recognized and honoured 54 Pandas alumnae from the years between 1908 and 1970, receiving their own Block 'A' sweaters in the U of A’s historic Main Gym.
The Block ‘A’ tradition dates back to 1932 with the creation of an honorary society of the University Athletics Board, male student-athletes were awarded evergreen sweaters that were adorned with a large gold ‘A’ in recognition of their leadership, sportsmanship and outstanding contributions in intercollegiate sports. In 1989, the Block ‘A’ Sweater family grew, and now awards sweaters to both Golden Bears and Pandas student-athletes after they complete three years of eligibility at the U of A. For Pandas Alumnae who competed for three years previous to 1989, University of Alberta Athletics has started an initiative to award sweaters to those female student athletes who did not receive one during their time of competition. The Block ‘A’ sweater transcends boarders, sport, athletic ability and age, uniting our alumni in an everlasting bond of family.
