Fourth-year University of Alberta Golden Bears swimmer Nick Kostiuk is the Sherlock Holmes Athlete of the Week for the week of November 28, 2016

The Faculty of Science student-athlete broke one Canada West record, and hauled in a total of six medals at the 2016-17 Canada West swimming championships, which were hosted at the Kinsmen Sports Centre pool in Edmonton, including three gold medals in individual races. He finished atop the podium in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke races, and his time of 2:09.97 in the 200m final on Sunday bested a record that was set in 2009.

He also helped Alberta’s 4 x 100m medley relay team to a gold finish, bringing his personal medal haul to four, all gold. He also swam on the Bears’ bronze medal 4 x 100m freestyle relay team and the 800m freestyle relay team that also captured bronze.

Nick was named a first team Canada West all-star for his efforts, and he and the Golden Bears, as well as Pandas, will next advance to the Canadian university national swimming championships, which run February 24-26, 2017 in Quebec at the University of Sherbrooke.
