Support The Sport

University of Alberta varsity athletes have given their all to become a Golden Bear or Panda. Financial constraints shouldn’t hold them back from achieving their athletic and academic goals.

Your support ensures every U of A student athlete has the resources and opportunity to compete at the highest level in both sport and school.

By giving, you provide access to:

• High-performance training resources
• Apparel and equipment
• Competitions, travel and meals
• Academic support

The fact is, if Golden Bears and Pandas are to reach their next level athletically, academically and professionally, we the alumni and organization have to help them make it happen.

A requirement of being a student-athlete at the University of Alberta is an extraordinary amount of dedication both academically and athletically beyond the normal university student experience. With an average of 17 hours per week dedicated to training in addition to being full-time students, Golden Bears and Pandas often do not have the time to engage in part-time jobs, which in turn makes it difficult for them to pay the expenses associated with playing high performance sport, and achieve their varsity and post-varsity sport goals.

While the University of Alberta is very proud to continuously lead the nation in Academic All-Canadians – as of 2017 the University of Alberta led U SPORTS with 2,750 all-time academic all-Canadians – we have fallen behind our competitors, provincially and nationally, in areas that directly affect a student athlete’s performance. High-performance training access and equipment, team travel, equipment and apparel, meal per diem and academic support are all areas that now require a coordinated and organized fundraising effort if Golden Bears and Pandas student athletes are going to continue to be the best in the country in their sport competition.

Our first coordinated and organized effort to raise funds for University of Alberta student athletes began in 1985 when the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation, now the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, developed the Adopt-An-Athlete Program to provide financial assistance for the varsity sports programs. And while the Adopt-An-Athlete Program raised essential support for Golden Bears and Pandas teams for over 30 years, the needs of student athletes have changed, as has the landscape and competitiveness of Canadian university sport.

Support The Sport aims to get our student athletes ahead of the change. Where they can dictating the pace, and define the future of Canadian university sport. Our Golden Bears and Pandas alumni, friends and family create a positive environment for change in the lives of our Golden Bears and Pandas, and together builds champions.
