Don Horwood, who coached the University of Alberta Golden Bears basketball team for 26 years, has been announced as a member of the 2014 Alberta Sports Hall of Fame induction class. The announcement was made on Monday, March 3 at a media conference at the Percy Page Centre in Edmonton.
Horwood will be officially enshrined on May 30th at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet, held annually in Red Deer, Alberta.
Originally from Carbonear, Newfoundland, Horwood served as the Golden Bears’ head coach from 1983 to 2009, and in that time guided the U of A to 15 national championship tournament appearances, as well as three national championship titles (1994, 1995 and 2002) and two silver medals. His 313 regular season wins is a Canada West record, and he also owns a 71-57 mark in the playoffs. He and the Bears amassed seven Canada West titles, while Horwood himself was a three-time national coach of the year.
Recently inducted into the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame (2013), Horwood was also named the Alberta Basketball Provincial Coach of the Year twice (1994 and 1995), and was given the City of Edmonton Salute to Excellence in 2007-08.
