Canada West RPI Standings

- The Canada West basketball regular season concludes this weekend, with several teams still vying for one of 12 men’s and women’s playoff berths
- Playoff spots will be determined by the conference standings (win-loss records)
- Ratings Percentage Indexes (RPI) will then be used to seed the 12 playoff teams
- Conference playoff action opens February 16
EDMONTON – With just one weekend remaining in the Canada West men’s and women’s basketball regular seasons, the race to the playoffs is almost complete.
The top 12 teams from the 2016-17 regular season standings – based on win-loss records – will earn post-season berths, with Ratings Percentage Indexes (RPI) then used to seed the playoff teams at the conclusion of play Sunday.
The official Canada West RPI rankings will be updated Friday, Saturday, and Sunday following the completion of games and displayed on the men’s and women’s basketball standings pages.
Heading into this weekend, a total of seven men’s basketball teams have locked up playoff berths, while 10 women’s teams have secured their place in the conference playoffs.
On the men’s side, seven teams are vying for the final five playoff spots, as Fraser Valley (9-9), Brandon (9-11), Mount Royal (8-10), Thompson Rivers (8-10), MacEwan (7-11), Regina (7-11), and Victoria (7-11) are all looking to crack the top 12.
In women’s play, MacEwan (6-12), UNBC (6-12), and Lethbridge (5-13) head into the final weekend jockeying for the remaining two playoff spots.
RPI background information
Canada West implemented RPI prior to the 2016-17 season to account for regular season strength of schedule, as the conference’s 17 members faced varying opponents this season.
The RPI formula used for both men’s and women’s basketball this season is:
RPI = 25% team winning percentage (WP) x 1.2 away win + 0.8 home win, 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponent’s average winning percentage (OOWP).
Playoff format and schedule
After the top 12 teams have been determined based on their win-loss record, RPI will then be used to seed.
For example, Saskatchewan enters the weekend sitting fifth in the women’s standings, but first in the women’s RPI. Should the Huskies remain first in the RPI at the conclusion of the regular season, they would enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
The top four teams based on RPI will receive a bye in the first week of the playoffs, which will feature four best-of-three play-in series. The following week will consist of four best-of-three quarter-finals, leading to the Final Four hosted by the highest remaining seed.
The U SPORTS Final Eight tournaments will be hosted in Victoria (women’s) and Halifax (men’s) respectively March 9-12.
WEEK 1: Feb. 16-19 (best-of-three play-in series):
Teams seeded 1-4 by RPI receive the first week bye

Series 1 - 12 @5
Series 2 - 11 @ 6
Series 3 - 10 @ 7
Series 4 - 9 @ 8

WEEK 2: Feb. 23-26 (best-of-three quarter-finals):
Winner of Series 1 @ 4
Winner of Series 2 @ 3
Winner of Series 3 @ 2
Winner of Series 4 @ 1

March 3-4 (Final Four hosted by the highest remaining RPI seed using single elimination) games).
