Fresh off the 2017 Spring Camp, the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team has bolstered their talented coaching staff, adding J.C. Boice and Paul Dawson for the upcoming 2017/18 season.

Boice will take over as the Bears new quarterback coach and assistant offensive coordinator for 2017. He has over 20 years of experience both playing and coaching the position. Boice is the Senior Level Quarterback Coach and Managing Director for the National Football Academies and is coming off a stint as the head coach of the Canadian Junior Football League’s Westshore rebels. Under Boice the Rebels finished with a 10-1-1 record in 2016, with Boice earning the BCFC and CJFL Coach of the Year. He will join the offensive coaching unit, led by OC Jason Sulz, as a full-time coach in August.

“J.C. brings with him an outstanding reputation for is work in quarterback development and the passing game.” said Golden Bears head coach Chris Morris. “Not only will J.C be an outstanding asset in the development of our current players, his reputation and ability to develop young quarterbacks will make the University of Alberta a destination of choice for elite quarterback prospects in Alberta and from around the county.”

Dawson joins the Golden Bears after 30+ years of experience at the high school and University sport levels, most recently serving as the Defensive Coordinator for Saskatchewan’s U17 team. Dawson spent 14 seasons as the Regina Rams defensive coordinator, winning a Canada West Championship in 2000. Dawson will serve as the Golden Bears new linebackers coach.

“Paul has tremendous experience at the U SPORTS level. He will bolster a defensive unit led by Defensive Coordinator Danny Boily that showed great improvement last season and which is looking to take another big step forward in 2017.” continued Morris. “Paul will assist in daily defensive planning duties, as well as coaching our impressive group of linebackers. His experience and expertise will be tremendous additions to our program.”

The Golden Bears will open the season at home on September 1st against the defending Hardy Cup champion Calgary Dinos.
