Justin Lawrence (#51) and Mark Korte (#65)
Fourth-year Golden Bears offensive linemen Mark Korte
and Justin Lawrence
became the most recent student-athletes from the University of Alberta to be selected in the CFL draft, as each were chosen on Thursday night.
Korte was the first student-athlete from Canada West selected in the CFL draft when he was taken fourth overall by the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the first round. With Korte being selected fourth, it also represents the highest a Golden Bear has been selected since Simeon Rottier went first overall in 2009, and will now join Golden Bears running back Ed Ilnicki
, who was drafted by Ottawa in 2017.
Lawrence was taken with the 39th overall pick in the fifth round by the Calgary Stampeders.
Both veteran Golden Bears anchored one of the best offensive lines in Canada this past season, helping the Bears qualify for their first postseason appearance under head coach Chris Morris. Korte and Lawrence earned Canada West first team all-star and U SPORTS first team All-Canadian honours this past season, while Korte also won the Canada West Lineman of the Year award. The Golden Bears finished second in U SPORTS with over 1,700 rushing yards this past season, 1,468 of which came from Ilnicki himself, who set a new Canada West single-season record.
Korte and Lawrence join recent Golden Bear CFL draftees Ilnicki and receiver Tylor Henry
(Winnipeg Blue Bombers), who were each selected last year. It marks the first time that Golden Bears have been selected in consecutive years of the CFL draft since 2004 and 2005.
A total of 15 Canada West student-athletes were drafted on Thursday night, including eight from the Calgary Dinos and four from the UBC Thunderbirds, who led the conference in players drafted.
