Golden Bears hockey
For the first time ever, the University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey team will face the Edmonton Oiler rookies as the away team as the two squads will drop the puck Sept. 16, 2015, at Rexall Place in Edmonton. Tickets are available for purchase for $30 each through EdmontonOilers.com, as well as at all Ticketmaster locations starting Friday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m.
The previous 24 tilts were all played at the U of A’s historic Clare Drake Arena, and the Golden Bears, who are coming off their second straight CIS championship title, have won 13 of those 24 games.
The Oiler rookies, however, claimed victory in 2014 thanks to a 4-2 showing before more than 3,000 fans on the U of A’s North Campus. Kellen Jones, Bogdan Yakimov, Travis Ewanyk and Mitch Holmberg scored for the Oilers last season, and T.J. Foster and James Dobrowolski replied for the Bears. The Bears and Oiler rookies have split the last six games against each other, with each side winning three times.
“This game is a huge benefit to the Golden Bears hockey program and a great example of the way both organizations continue to work together to enhance the hockey community in Edmonton,” said Golden Bears general manager Stan Marple. “We are very grateful that the Edmonton Oilers recognize the importance of it, especially within the community, as well as the great entertainment value it provides. The exposure to NHL professionalism and competition is very important to us, and of course this game raises significant publicity and revenue, which keeps us competitive in the CIS hockey landscape. Our organization looks forward to this game every year, and I know we’ll be keyed up to avenge our loss from last season.”
The history of the Golden Bears vs. Edmonton Oilers rookies game goes back to 1988, and was a yearly tradition for over 20 years. The game went on hiatus following the 2009 tilt, but was restarted in 2013. The teams are 1-1 against each other since the game was restarted.
