Golden Bears Hockey
REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina men’s hockey team was defeated for the second-consecutive night on home ice, as the Alberta Golden Bears picked up a 4-0 win and a weekend sweep at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday night.
Tyson Baillie and Stephane Legault each had a goal and an assist for the visitors, who move to 6-2-0 with the win. Luke Philp and Jayden Hart also had markers for the Golden Bears.
Alberta’s defence was impressive, limiting the Cougars to 21 shots on the game, all of which were handled by rookie netminder Brendan Burke. Dawson MacAuley made his first start of the season in net for the Cougars, stopping 28 of the 32 shots he faced.
Baillie opened the scoring late in the first period, beating MacAuley on a quick shot with assists from Lucas Nickles and Burke. Philp’s goal came with just two seconds left in the frame after Regina defender Kirk Bear was sent off for holding.
Regina had three powerplay opportunities in the second, but Burke and the Golden Bear defence were up to the task. Hart scored to stretch the lead to 3-0 at the 12:48 mark in the middle frame, firing a beauty of a shot to the top corner before MacAuley could react.
Legault added the finishing touches with just under three minutes to play in the game, scoring a short-handed marker for his second of the season off assists from Jamie Crooks and Sawyer Lange.
The Cougars are on the road next weekend, heading to Calgary to take on Mount Royal University. Alberta will return home to face the Calgary Dinos in a weekend set.
