Face-Off 2017 set for Saturday at Northlands

Golden Bears and Ooks to revive Charity Classic this weekend at Northlands Coliseum

By Connor Hood on December 6, 2017

It took 26 years since they last met in 1991, but the Face-Off Charity exhibition match between the University of Alberta Golden Bears and NAIT Ooks is set to return this weekend to Northlands Coliseum. The eighth-ever charity classic between the two programs is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Northlands, with tickets still available online, and at the door.

Twenty percent of all net ticket revenue will support the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation, with the remaining revenue split evenly between the Ooks and Golden Bears.

The University of Alberta and NAIT competed in seven charity games from 1984/95 through 1990/1991, six of which were held at Northlands Coliseum, and one at the Northlands Agricom. All previous charity games benefited the Ronald McDonald House of Edmonton, with this year’s game the first to support the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Not only is the Face-Off game this weekend an incredible opportunity for fans to support the Stollery, it also gives a rare chance at watching two of the best hockey programs in Canada square off. The Golden Bears enter the winter break with an unmatched 15-1-0 record, and the No. 1 seed in the U SPORTS Top Ten. Like the Bears, the Ooks are sitting comfortably atop the ACAC standings with an 11-1-1-1 record through 14 conference games.

Historically, NAIT has also played the Golden Bears incredibly tough, including back-to-back wins over Alberta in 2015 (4-2 - Feb. 21; 4-3 2OT - Sept. 25). However, the Golden Bears are currently riding a three-game win streak over their cross-town rivals, including a 4-3 OT win over NAIT in September.

“We always look forward to playing NAIT whenever the opportunity arises. Both programs have such a rich hockey history, and every game offers such high entertainment value.” says Golden Bears head coach Serge Lajoie, who played in three Face-Off games himself as a Bear (89, 90, and 91). “The opportunity to support the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation is extra special for us. We always encourage our players to be strong role models in the Edmonton community, around campus, and provide guidance or support to less fortunate children. This game provides us with an opportunity to hopefully make a difference in a child's life.”

The Golden Bears 15-1-0 record is their best start to a conference season in nearly 13 years, and represents one of the best starts in program history. The last time the Bears started with 15 wins prior to the winter break was in 2004/2005, with that Golden Bear team winning their fifth-straight Canada West Championship, and the first of back-to-back University Cups.

The Ooks, meanwhile, have won two of the past three, and four of the last six Alberta Collegiate titles, including back-to-back in 2015 and 2016. The 2016 Ooks team was also arguably the best in ACAC history, as they completed a perfect 36-0 season en route to the provincial championship.

"I know the guys are really excited, given the dynamics between the two program," said NAIT head coach Tim Fragle. "Both programs are extremely successful, and the opportunity piggyback and help the Stollery, and the local hockey community is a great one."
