TORONTO (U SPORTS) – U SPORTS announced Monday the roster of the 2017 U SPORTS Men’s Hockey All-Star Team for the upcoming two-game series against Canada’s National Junior Team prospects.
University of Alberta Golden Bear forwards Luke Philp and Cole Sanford, along with defenceman Jason Fram will take part in the annual all-star game, after turning in outstanding first halves with the Bears.
The games are set for Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT and Thursday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ont., home of the OHL’s Niagara Ice Dogs. The games will mark the culmination of a four-day camp for the U SPORTS Men’s Hockey All-Stars beginning Dec. 11, while also serving as part of Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp for the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship slated for Dec. 26 -Jan. 5 in Buffalo, N.Y.
All three Golden Bears selected to the U SPORTS/Hockey Canada All-Star game are in their second seasons with the University of Alberta, and have helped lead the Bears to an incredibly 15-1-0 start to their Canada West season. Philp, through 16 conference games, sits second in conference scoring with 25 points, while he leads Canada West with 18 assists. Also leading the conference is Fram, whose 15 points in 16 games are the most by any defender in the conference. Sanford, meanwhile, has already set new career-highs with six goals and 12 points in 16 games, while also sitting in a tie for the team-lead with three powerplay markers.
The Golden Bears 15 wins entering the winter break is the most since the 2004/2005, as their 15-1-0 record is tops in Canada West, putting them a full three points clear of the Saskatchewan Huskies. Fifth-year forward Jamie Crooks was the only Bear to be named to the U SPORTS All-Star team last year.
