Bears open their home schedule this weekend at Clare Drake Arena

By Connor Hood on September 12, 2018

Opening their home schedule this weekend, the defending University Cup Champion Alberta Golden Bears host both the Mount Royal Cougars and Calgary Dinos this weekend at Clare Drake Arena in the 34th Annual Brick Invitational.

The Golden Bears will host the Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night, before welcoming the Dinos to Clare Drake Arena on Saturday night. The Cougars will also host the Dinos on Thursday night in Calgary to open the non-conference tournament.

The tournament will serve as one of the final tune-ups for each program as they gear up for the Canada West season, which begins on September 28th. The Golden Bears split their two meetings with UBC last weekend at the Vancouver Canucks Youngstars Classic in Penticton to open their 2018 schedule.

In 33 previous Brick Invitational tournaments, Alberta has won the tournament 17 times, owning a 63-17-5 all-time record.  The Mount Royal Cougars captured their first-ever tournament title in 2016, as they now sport an all-time record of 5-5-0. The Dinos, meanwhile, have captured 4 Brick Invitational tournaments, the last of which coming in 1995.

Following this weekend’s action the Golden Bears will head north for the Athabasca College Hockey Challenge, before opening their Canada West season on September 29th with a series against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
