CALGARY – Brendan Burke made 21 saves, while Tyler Soy scored twice, as the Alberta Golden Bears picked up a 3-0 shutout win over the Mount Royal Cougars, Saturday night in Calgary.
The win avenges the Bears 7-3 loss the previous night to Mount Royal at home, their first loss to MRU in 15 games.
The Golden Bears would be the first on the board as Tyler Soy put the first shot for the visiting team into the back of the net. The former Victoria Royal found some space and buried the short side shot for his third of the season.
The Cougars found themselves on the wrong end of a few penalties in the second and had to scramble to keep the Bears from adding to their lead. Cougars captain Tyson Helgesen was laying the body out for his team making 3 blocks in one penalty kill.
After killing off three penalties the Cougars were charging but couldn’t get the puck past Bears goalie Brendan Burke. Alberta would shut the momentum down though scoring their second goal with only five seconds left in the period.
The third period was fast to start off as the Cougars tried to get on the board. The risk taking would cost them though as Soy would find some space on a two on one and capitalize for his second of the game in the fifth minute.
That’s the way this one ends as the Bears win it 3-0 and split the series with the Cougars. Next weekend the Cougars head east to take on Regina while the Golden Bears will take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
